Successful examples of EA
Numerous enterprise
software failures have kept many companies away from EA transformation.
However, EA is not the reason of failure, men who build EA are. Let’s take a
look at a few successful examples.
In the article, we can see how much effort and time HP BSC had
paid on its EA transformation. Software has always been a critical problem for
every companies, because nowadays information systems are built on software. We
must treat software changing carefully. If there is any mistake, it will damage
companies badly.
HP BSC treat its internal software transformation very carefully. Their IT team failed the first try of MS Project, but they soon changed into another way. This case says that software changing or EA building might not be successful at the first try. We must be patient, be careful, and check the overall result before we make big move in software.
Software need continual maintenance, upgrading, and strengthening security. So when we choose enterprise software, we must take these into consideration. Is it easy to maintain? Is it easy to upgrade? Is it safe? We have to look at a software from a long-term perspective. HP BSC demands a software which can be used over 30 years. We can learn a lesson from this and the following example.
In this example, the problem is that Banque Accord's IT team did
not build their from a long-term perspective.
Quote: "The "fastest and best" approach to
developing new applications proved, at first, to be highly beneficial to
building a completely new activity. However, the limits of such an approach
quickly became apparent with an IT system that was becoming more and more
complex, heterogeneous, difficult to maintain, and sometimes redundant. With
this in mind, it was becoming very difficult to maintain an adequate skill
level to support all of the technologies deployed."
This is why they were seeking for a large renovation project. What
they wanted was a software of quality and continual improvement.

The two cases above have a same thing that both companies found
help from EA because that they were facing serious problems. However, sometimes
EA can not only fix problem, but also brings more unanticipated
benefits. In this case, we can see how it happens.
In beginning, the risk management department of the Unipol Group
was just trying to set a new financial regulations for insurance industry.
However, this project rolled in more departments than they expected, including
managers of risk, operational risk, compliance, controls law, business
processes and internal auditors.
The company did not quit, but decided to meet the needs to create
a broader, enterprise-wide source of process information. They successfully
created a unique framework through the analysis of operational risks and
business processes shared by stakeholders, and also built a structure and
federated approach for risk and control management.
During these examples, we can see that EA is not merely a
unchangeable blue print. EA is an organism that grows with time. EA must have a
static core, meanwhile, it must have an agility to adjust itself during the
building and maintaining process. If we put enough time and effort, and always
check ourselves if we are on the right track, EA can definitely greatly benefit
us.
